What is the S.M.A.R.T.P.H.D™?

S.M.A.R.T.P.H.D ™ is a coaching framework I have designed to help PhD students think about themselves, and act accordingly, as a naturally creative, resourceful and whole person by focusing on:

2 x 1:1 Coaching Sessions

Everyone who joins the program has an initial private coaching session with me.

In that session we set your SMART goals and discuss a study strategy plan.

You then get a planning bundle and SMART goals worksheets to establish clear and realistic goals for the following months.

At the end of the program, you book your second 1:1 session where we take a look at how you have progressed.

We can also put a plan in place to ensure you submit your thesis on time.

Weekly Group Coaching Sessions
Less isolation and more accountability.

Every week we meet for a small group coaching session.

These sessions are where you get additional coaching, a chance to check in with your weekly goals, as well as peer support and community.

On the call you have a chance to share how things have been going for you during the week.

Depending on what comes up for you (and others on the call), I then go deeper into what you need to help push through the blocks that have been coming up.

Topics that we generally work on include:
  • weekly goals
  • Procrastination
  • time management
  • impostor syndrome, motivation, routines, self-awareness, dealing with expectations, academic confidence and other topics that will help students to have a better PhD life.

Each session ends with a short exercise to help you get clarity on what you’re going to work on the following week (including an action plan to help you implement).

Sessions are recorded so you can catch up if you are unable to attend.

On-Demand Coaching and Peer Support

The program hosts a WhatsApp group chat that allows you to connect with your peers.

You can also send messages to me in between the coaching calls, so I can guide you if you’re feeling stuck during the week.

By being part of a group of other researchers who are navigating similar struggles, you feel less isolated on your academic journey and build accountability.

Managing time +task to improve productivity

This module teaches you time management techniques to optimise your energy and working style.

(For example, if you’re an early- bird there’s no point putting time in  your diary to write in the evening).

By organising your day to truly harness your strengths, you work less while getting more done.

This reduces your stress and eliminates procrastination.

And it frees up time for you to focus on other parts of your life.

Improving self-control and efficiency

In this module you’ll create a strategy to focus on what’s really important at any given time.

This big-picture plan becomes a blueprint that you can regularly check in against to make sure you’re staying on track with your priorities.

For example, you make the most out of the time you spend with your supervisors because you’re clear on what needs to be done.

Meaningful activities to increase productivity

In this module you’ll learn how to implement habits and routines that increase your energy and productivity.

For example, creating good writing habits allows you to finish on time to meet your deadlines.

Creating consistent routines gives you clear boundaries between your PhD work time and your personal time.

You then have more time and energy to spend on meaningful activities outside of your PhD.

Motivation isn’t a tap that you turn on and off.

In this module you get access to tools and techniques that help you increase motivation.

You’ll find your driving force so that you enjoy the writing process again, while improving your willingness to complete all your PhD tasks (even the ones that aren’t your favourite).
